______________

DELL COULDN’T HELP chuckling to himself, seeing the confusion of the staggering outlaws searching for something to use to defend themselves against the two interlopers.

“That was sure a neat trick, Julio. Let’s search this camp and have a set-down with these fellas. I’m anxious to see what they might know about our arsonist. He could be right here among them.

“I’ve been gone from home a long time and would like to get back to Guinn before she forgets what I look like, or various other things about me.”

Julio laughed. “I would not mind going home, either, my friend. Little Dove feels the same about me, I am sure. So, let us get busy before the fire water drains away from their system, and they go silent on us.”

“I suggest we play dumb at first, ask each one if they’d do such a thing. They might give up the real fire starter.”

“That is a fine suggestion. Grab the most sober ones first before they get to where they can actually think. That one over there already standing might be a good place to begin.”

“You take him, I’ll get that one who’s gone over to that tree to drain his pickle. Remember, we need to look for the arsonist or someone who knows the names of the posse who burnt him out.”

Julio nodded and hurried to snatch the first man by the collar. Dell took off toward the one buttoning up his pants. A man who knew to do that was sober enough to talk straight.

He clamped fingers around the man’s arm and jerked him so hard his feet left the ground. “What the—?” He swung his free fist toward Dell.

“Take ‘er easy. Just want to ask you a few questions.”

“I don’t answer no questions from no—” He paused and peered at Dell. “Who are you, anyways? Come barging into our place.”

“Let’s just sit here on this log and relax. Me and my friend—that big man over there—we’re hunting someone who’s done something terrible. Something I’d hope you’d never do.”

The man gaped at Dell who was glad of the moonlight since features told a lot about a man telling the truth or lying.

“What’s that? I ain’t done nothin’.”

“He’s burning up women and little children.”

“Naw, oh naw. You’re right, I’d never… why, I’ve got me seven brothers and sisters, one still crawlin’ around.”

“Of course, I knew it, and I’ll bet if you knew anyone doing that, you’d come right straight to me or my friend over there and tell us, wouldn’t you?”

The man stared at the ground, and Dell gave him time to think. These men didn’t want to squeal on their fellow outlaws.

He began to shake his head no.

Dell went right on. “Or maybe you’d just want to warn the folks that someone like this evil man was coming. Maybe you could help us do that?”

“Well, sure, but I can’t squeal on no one.”

“I understand. There was a bunch of men went in a posse to capture a killer, but instead of doing that something got out of hand and the man’s house got set on fire.
